TIAA-CREF Internship and Scholarship Program

The TIAA-CREF Actuarial Scholars Program ("Program") is a combination tuition award and mandatory summer internship.  The TIAA-CREF Scholars Program participation is awarded to promising UNC Charlotte students intending to pursue a career in the Actuarial Profession. 2009-10 is the final year of committed funding!

A.        Eligibility. Each year in May, the University will select up to two (2) undergraduate students ("Scholars") who meet the following requirements:

1. The students must be authorized to work in the United States.

2. The students must be majoring in a program in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

3. The students must have completed fifty-four (54) or more University credits with an overall Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher.

4. The students must be full-time students, which is defined as enrolled in twelve (12) or more hours per semester, excluding summer sessions.

B.        Application Procedure. Eligible students shall provide a current resume, a recent transcript, two letters of reference from University Faculty Members, any additional supporting letters from other individuals as desired, a statement of purpose, and a letter of interest.  Intern finalists will be interviewed by a Department of Mathematics and Statistics Review Panel before the final selection by the University.

C.        Good Standing. Scholars must remain in Good Standing, both academically and in terms of student discipline.  Failure by an Intern to remain in Good Standing will result in forfeiture of the remainder of the Award.  If the forfeiture occurs in the middle of a semester, the Intern will be required to return a pro-rated portion of the tuition award from that semester.  For purposes of this Award, Good Standing shall mean that the Intern:

1. Continues the pursuit of his/her degree and fulfills the conditions of the Award.

2. Maintains enrollment in a program of study suitable for training for the actuarial profession (as approved by the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics).

3. Maintains an overall Grade Point Average of 3.0 or higher in each semester of the award.

4. Continues as a full-time student, enrolled in no less than twelve (12) hours per semester, excluding summer sessions.

5. Maintains an appropriate level of performance and participation in each of the enrolled classes.

6. Participates fully and responsibly in the mandatory summer internship at TIAA-CREF and enrollment in MATH 3551 (Mathematics Cooperative Education or 49ership Experience) during the first summer of award.

7. Participates in the 1-2 week New York portion of the summer internship with TIAA-CREF.

8. Sits for the appropriate exams from the SOA (Society of Actuaries) as determined by the Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics after having been provided reasonable notice of such exams.

D.        Internship Award. The selected Scholars shall receive the following benefits based upon their selection and internship ("Award"):

1. During the first summer following the start of the award, the Intern will receive a stipend of four thousand dollars ($4000), subject to the standard deductions for taxes, FICA, etc., ("Stipend") in exchange for an internship at the Charlotte campus of TIAA-CREF.  This Stipend is based on a salary of ten dollars ($10) per hour for a forty (40) hour week for ten (10) consecutive weeks running from the last week of May until mid August.  Failure by the Intern to work the scheduled ten (10), forty (40)-hour weeks may result in reduction of the Stipend.

2. Payment or reimbursement for the direct costs and fees associated with enrollment and (in-state) tuition for each semester from the start of the award up to and including the Spring Semester following the mandatory summer internship.

3. Travel and accommodation expenses for an arranged trip to TIAA-CREF in New York of up to two (2) weeks in duration, as set forth and arranged by TIAA CREF.

4. The Award does not include transportation for the Intern to the TIAA-CREF Charlotte campus during the term of the internship.

5. The Award may be renewed for a subsequent year if the Intern remains in Good Standing.  The Award shall not exceed either one summer stipend or four (4) semesters.  The Award shall terminate upon graduation or completion of the requirements for a bachelors degree by the Intern.
