Master of Science Degree: Concentration in General Mathematics
The M.S. degree in General Mathematics is designed both to provide advanced skills and knowledge for those seeking either positions in industry or in government, or teaching positions at the junior college or community college level, and to provide professional development to those currently in such positions. Graduates of the program will also be well prepared to enter directly into at least the second year of a Ph.D. program in mathematics, applied mathematics or statistics depending on the particular courses selected.

Additional Requirements for Admission into the Concentration in General Mathematics.

  1. Applicants must present evidence of the satisfactory completion of at least 27 semester hours of mathematics at the undergraduate level or above approved by the department Graduate committee.
  2. A satisfactory score is required on the Quantitative Portion of the Graduate Record Examination.
  3. It is recommended that the student have a basic knowledge of at least two of the areas of algebra, real analysis and topology.

Concentration Requirements.

The Concentration in General Mathematics requires successful completion of a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work approved by the department Graduate Committee among which must be Intermediate Analysis I and II. The department groups the courses which may be applied toward the M.S. in Mathematics into five broad areas: Analysis, Applied Mathematics, Probability & Statistics, Algebra & Topology, and Computer Science. At least one course should be selected from two of the latter four groups. Each candidate must demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the department Graduaperform satisfactorily on an oral comprehensive examination over the candidates program of study.

Thesis. Completion of a satisfactory thesis is optional. Subject to the approval by the department Graduate Committee, this thesis may be either original work, work of an expository nature, or the mathematical formulation and solution of a particular industrial or business problem suggested by the career interests of the student.
