Master of Science Degree: Concentration in Applied Mathematics

The M.S. Concentration in Applied Mathematics is designed to develop critical thinking and intuition, and to provide advanced work in the techniques of mathematical analysis and their application to the problems of industry and technology. These skills will include those necessary for: dealing with the problems encountered in industry, business, and governmental work; holding leadership positions in industrial or governmental work; teaching Applied Mathematics at the undergraduate or community college level; and further study in Applied Mathematics leading to the Ph.D. degree.

Degree Requirements

A candidate for the Concentration in Applied Mathematics must complete a minimum of 30 semester hours of graduate work approved by the Department graduate committee.

These shall include:

Core Requirements (21 semester hours)

  1. Intermediate Analysis I and II, Numerical Linear Algebra, and Research Seminar
  2. 1 course in Numerical Analysis,
  3. 1 course in Advanced Analysis ,
  4. 2 courses in Advanced Applied Mathematics.

Electives

(6 semester hours) 1 advanced elective, 1 elective in Mathematics or a suitable area of application to be selected with the approval of the student's adviser.

Research Seminar

All candidates for the Concentration in Applied Mathematics are required to complete 3 hours of Research Seminar in which they must complete an independent project under the supervision of a member of the graduate faculty. The project could involve a specific application to a concrete problem of techniques identified in the literature or studied in other courses.

Comprehensive Examination

Each candidate for the Concentration in Applied Mathematics must perform satisfactorily on a final comprehensive examination.

Thesis

A student may choose to expand the work begun in the Research Seminar into a master's thesis by registering to fulfill the advanced elective requirement. This thesis option affords the student the opportunity to do professional/scholarly work demonstrating proficiency in the area of Applied Mathematics.
