Dear math 1100 students,

I want to take this opportunity welcome you to my class. You are part of the College of Education's Freshman Learning Community. The idea of such a community has proved successful in the past year as several colleges have embraced the plan. I have not taught in the program before, but I look forward to teaching in it and to having a relatively small section (35) of College Algebra.

Rather than spend this time talking about myself, I urge you to visit my website to learn about me. You'll also need to visit the website to get started on the course. The website is http://www.math.uncc.edu/~hbreiter/index.html but if you forget the URL and fail to bookmark it, just go to a search engine like google and type my name Harold Reiter. The website will come right up. The website for the course is http://www.math.uncc.edu/~hbreiter/m1100/index.html You are asked to complete the form first and then to learn more about the course. You'll hear me say on many occasions that there are three important ideas in the course. They are function notation and composition of functions, the Test Interval Technique for solving inequalities, and completing the square for solving quadratic equations and for finding the vital information about parabolas and circles.

I am going to have to miss the first day of class. However, I urge you to be there for the lecture. It will cover several sections of the first chapter and the use of the website for the course. I'll be back from my trip in time for class on Wed, August 21. I expect that you will have completed the first homework assignment and be ready to turn it in. It should be stapled together: Pages(pp), 20-21, all problems on the form 6n+1; in other words, 1,7,13, etc; ie, every sixth problem starting with 1.

I expect to be in the office during the first week of June and a few days in July, but I will have access to email throughout the summer. Please write me at hbreiter@email.uncc.edu if you have concerns or questions.

Cheers,

Harold Reiter
